The Truth About Diagnosing MVP Syndrome, POTS & Dysautonomia

Millions of people nationwide and around the world have been diagnosed with heart murmurs, mitral valve prolapse, and MVP Syndrome (also known as Barlows Syndrome). What is confusing and often doesnt lead to the best diagnosis, testing or treatment is the fact there are a group of symptoms common to several disorders that have been termed MVP syndrome. And in some cases, mitral valve regurgitation is the cause. In many cases, however, a prolapsed valve isnt whats causing the problem its often dysautonomia. Dysautonomia is a malfunction of the autonomic or automatic nervous system that tells the heart, blood vessels and gut what to do on a daily basis. In reality, MVP syndrome is dysautonomia. Similarly, POTS disease (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) is actually a form of dysautonomia. Accurate diagnosis is the key to getting better. So when it comes to diagnosing whether you have mitral valve prolapse, POTS, or some other autonomic syndrome, its very important to see the right doctor and find a clinic or treatment center that specializes in these types of disorders.

If you think you may have MVP syndrome or POTS, we know you want answers, the right doctors and to feel better as soon as possible. The Dysautonomia-MVP Center, LLC, with Dr. Paula Moore (internal medicine) and Dr. Susan Phillips (family practice) is Birmingham, Alabamas best, most advanced mitral valve prolapse and dysautonomia treatment clinic with all the latest diagnostic testing, proven classical treatment, as well as natural options that include exercise, diet, hydration, and vitamin supplements where appropriate. With our clinical evidence focused approach and over 40 years of combined experience, we can help you find out whether its really moderate mitral valve regurgitation, a heart murmur or POTS disease and suggest treatments that may make a difference. And no matter whether youre in the Birmingham area or not, we regularly help patients nationwide and we will try to help you.

It is important to remember that, as with autonomic or other nervous system disorders, its best to get specialized help earlier rather than later. While the patients we see might have a heart murmur such as mitral regurgitation or dysautonomia, and dont typically have life-threatening symptoms, disorders such as MVP syndrome can affect your quality of life.
